A Whimsical Weekend in Coventry: Fantasy, History & The Midnight Court Soiree
Planning a visit to Coventry for The Midnight Court Soirée? Why not make a whole weekend of it?
With medieval buildings, cathedral ruins, independent shops, hidden green spaces and plenty of history, Coventry is surprisingly perfect for a little fantasy-inspired adventure.
Whether you’re a lover of fantasy, romantasy, folklore, history or simply unusual things to do, here’s how we’d spend a magical weekend in the city.

🏰 Step Back in Time at St Mary’s Guildhall
First stop? St Mary’s Guildhall, of course.
This stunning medieval building sits in the heart of Coventry and dates back more than 700 years. Its Great Hall, historic kitchen and centuries-old architecture make it one of the city’s most atmospheric places to visit.
And there’s a very good reason we’re mentioning it…
On 13 March 2027, it will become home to The Midnight Court Soirée.
But more on that later.

⛪ Explore Coventry Cathedral
Just around the corner, you’ll find Coventry Cathedral, where the ruins of the old cathedral stand alongside the striking modern building.
It’s a brilliant place for history lovers, photographers and anyone who appreciates a slightly dramatic backdrop.
Take a wander through the ruins, explore the cathedral and imagine how different Coventry would have looked hundreds of years ago.
Very fitting for a weekend that involves entering another realm.

🌿 Find a Little Greenery
Need a break from the city?
Head to Lady Herbert’s Gardens, tucked away beside the historic city centre, or take a longer stroll around War Memorial Park.
If you’re staying for the whole weekend, these are lovely places to slow down, grab a coffee and pretend you’re wandering through an enchanted kingdom rather than Birmingham-adjacent Coventry.

🛍️ Discover Something Unusual at FarGo Village
For something a little less medieval, spend some time exploring FarGo Village.
This creative quarter is home to independent businesses, food, art, vintage finds and plenty of things you won’t find on the average high street.
It’s a great option if you’re looking for unusual things to do in Coventry or want to pick up something special before your big night out.
And who knows? You might even find the finishing touch for your Midnight Court outfit.

☕ Have Afternoon Tea in a Medieval Guildhall
If you’re looking for something a little more indulgent, why not make time for afternoon tea?
Tales of Tea, within St Mary’s Guildhall, offers food and afternoon tea in the historic Undercroft.
There’s something particularly satisfying about spending your afternoon drinking tea in a medieval building before returning that evening dressed as a fae, god, monster or member of mortal royalty.
Which brings us to the main event…

🌙 The Midnight Court Soirée
On 13 March 2027, the realms will gather at St Mary’s Guildhall for an evening of fantasy, music, dancing and courtly chaos.
The Midnight Court Soirée is a fantasy-inspired ball for lovers of fantasy books, romantasy, folklore, cosplay and dressing up.
For one night, the medieval Great Hall becomes a meeting place for different realms.
